In this programme NI supports four early-/mid-career fellows for three years in order to:
create the opportunity for emerging researchers to strengthen their research and publication record and establish themselves as independent scholars
enable emerging researchers to apply for grants and funding, based on their chosen research interests and the NI’s priorities
increase the capacity of the NI to offer employment to postdoctoral fellows, and in so doing retain continuity and lore
increase the capacity of the NI to mentor postgraduate students
transform the demographic of established researchers in South Africa
The programme aims to produce researchers who, by the end of their tenure, can secure major funding, enabling them to pursue their own research projects and careers into the future.
